Three prisoners were yesterday taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after separate incidents at the Lusignan and Camp Street prisons. According to reports Harley English 21, a prisoner at the Lusignan penitentiary, was making blocks using a machine when his right wrist was severed.
A source explained that some time Sunday afternoon Harley was asked to make blocks for the prison something he has done in the past. The source said that at some point during the block making exercise the machine developed a fault and the prisoner attempted to fix it.
The youth – who is due to be released this Saturday – attempted to rectify the problem but was not successful. To ensure the machine worked in order for him to complete his task, it is understood that Harley then inserted his right hand into the machine to clear what he thought was clogged sand and cement.
Soon after that Harley told prison officials that he felt a sharp pain and then made the gruesome discovery; he explained to officials that he saw his right wrist at the bottom of the machine. Harley who has been incarcerated for eight months for burglary, raised an alarm and was taken to GPHC where he was treated and returned to the prison and is now a patient at the Lusignan Prison Infirmary.
In a separate incident at the Camp Street jail, on Sunday, Shafeek Mohamed, Shivnandand Roopnarine and another prisoner were rushed to the GPHC after sustaining injuries during a brawl between the three men.
The three prisoners who are on remand for murder reportedly had a misunderstanding and a fight ensued. Two of the men sustained head injuries and one was stabbed.
Prison officials quickly brought the incident under control and the three were taken to the GPHC where they were treated and returned to that detention facility.
