A barefaced bandit was captured and bound after a failed robbery attempt. The bandit who was armed with a knife entered Chung Grocery at Betsy Ground, East Canje around 09:00 hours and attempted to rob the business place.
However his attempt was short-lived after he was captured, subdued and beaten by residents. Information revealed that the owner was at home with his wife in the lower flat of their two- storey building looking over the shop whilst watching football on his computer. His wife had just finished showering and had entered the upper flat.
The businessman said he suddenly felt something pressed to his neck and somebody ordered him to freeze. He did not take it for anything as he thought it was one of his friends playing a prank. However as the object was pressed further into his neck, he looked around and realized that he was about to be robbed.
He said that he struck the knife away and began struggling with the bandit.
The man subsequently released himself from the owner and told him that he was going after his wife. The startled woman had earlier heard her husband shouting to lock the doors. The woman upon attempting to see what was going on encountered the intruder on the inside steps. Her children had locked themselves in their rooms. The bandit ran back down the stairs and was again entangled with the owner in a fierce battle as he attempt to flee.
An eyewitness, who helped subdue the man, stated that he was standing not too far away on the road smoking a cigarette when he first saw the man riding a bicycle. At the time he was wearing a white T-shirt with a haversack on his back.
The felon leaned his bike on a lamp post, next to the grocery, went up the road and came back. He was wearing a green vest this time, the man said, and he did not pay much attention to the thief as he entered the shop.
He subsequently heard a commotion in the shop and saw the man struggling with the owner, before freeing himself and trying to flee. The owner was screaming and the man attempted to flee so the eyewitness entered the yard and grabbed him. The two had a scuffle before other residents came and help subdue the barefaced bandit.
It took a number of residents to subdue the man as he continued to struggle. He was subsequently tied up and handed over to the police who responded to the scene.
The man is not known in the area, but according to a source, he was recently arrested on a misdemeanor charge.
He and his bicycle were taken into custody at the Reliance Police Station. He later gave his name as Andrew Griffith, 21, but was giving different addresses.
