After completing 39 weeks of training, twelve officer cadets from Course 49 were promoted
to the rank of Ensign.
The course which commenced last April, with 36 cadets, among them six foreign students— three from the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force and three from the Belize Defence Force.
The 12 Ensigns were decorated with their new badges by Chief of Staff, Brigadier Patrick West, during a parade held in their honour at the drill square at Base Camp Stephenson.
During the period of the training 24 persons either withdrew or failed to achieve the minimum standards.
Of the 12 Ensigns who were decorated, two are from the Belize Defence Force and one from Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force.
The Ensigns who were successful had to complete 39 weeks training which ensured that they were exposed to a series of core values. This prepares them for Officership and to meet the demands of an evolving contemporary military environment in their field of work.
The training was done in three steps over three terms. In Term one of the training, the participants had to cover a series of areas including regimentation, introduction to basic military training and command at the section level in open country warfare.
Term two saw the participants being trained in language, minor staff duties and command at the platoon level in Open Country warfare. The final term saw the cadets being exposed to training in Close Country Warfare and internal security.
Chief of Staff, Brigadier Patrick West who decorated the Ensigns with the badges urged them all to strive to familiarize themselves with documents within the army’s arsenal that will be able to guide them as they transition to becoming young officers of the Force.
Brigadier West also spoke about the values, the Defence Act and the Standard Operation Procedures of the Force.
