One hundred and thirty-six workers of the Linden Mayor and Town Council (LM&TC) are more optimistic about their National Insurance Scheme (NIS) benefits, now that they are certain that the M&TC is honoring its obligation
in paying an excess of $70 million debt to the insurance company.
The LM&TC, in 2015, had entered an agreement with the NIS that was mandated by the court, which would have seen the council paying the scheme $200,000 per month in order to clear its debt.
According to Town Clerk Jenella Bowen, that is now no more, as the council is making every effort to fulfill its obligations to NIS, and by extension to the workers of the LM&TC. “As it is, they are now more disposable income in the council and of course the Toll Booth is given support in this regards.”
“We had paid it in January; February amount will be paid soon, and we are also paying our current arrears,” the Town Clerk said.
A worker of the LM&TC said that, they are more relived now; knowing that their pension is no longer in jeopardy.
As it was in the past the LM&TC could not afford to pay its current NIS which was $800,000 per month.
It was said in the past by the Town Clerk, Jenella Bowen, that there were times on a monthly basis that the council had the money to pay their NIS, but if they did paid that, then they would not have enough money to pay wage and salaries, and if they don’t pay that, then the workers would be out on the streets. So they are times when the council had to choose the lesser of the two evils.
“It’s not easy getting up every day and coming out here for three years straight doing my mandatory eight hours, and at the end of it all, to find out it was all for nothing. I have a family to take care of and to know my NIS is being paid in full just make I slept more comfortable now,” the worker said.
