Mar 10, 2017 Letters
Dear Editor,
As I was listening on the television to the speech of Bharrat Jagdeo at Babu Jaan, it prompted me to write this letter. I think Bharrat Jagdeo and his entire crew must be blamed for the state of Guyana. They were corrupted and they corrupted every sector in Guyana. I will not touch on all the stupidities that he said just to gain the attention of the PPP supporters. But I will deal with the part where he talked about the closing down of the sugar estates and the farmers that complaint to him about their land being taken away in Region 5.
Bharrat Jagdeo said that it’s the democratic rights for the sugar workers to strike and whenever they do that this, APNU+AFC Government wants to pressure them and close down estates. That is a total lie and he is trying his deceptive ways again. What he should have told the people there is that whenever sugar workers stand to make an extra day pay, it is GAWU and the PPP that call the strike and allow the workers to lose that extra pay. He should have told the sugar workers that under the PPP regime GAWU failed them and never called, demanded or organised a strike or protest. Workers were treated as slaves under the PPP and GAWU sat back and allowed it to happen.
It really took the PPP, GAWU and Bharrat Jagdeo a long time to know that workers have democratic rights and to strike. Under PPP whenever workers went on strike, they were branded or seen as opposition supporters. Now they were not but that was their right. I don’t think that this government will ever brand any worker as opposition when they strike for their rights and benefit. I don’t think that this government is unaware about strikes and struggles of the working class.
Bharrat Jagdeo should have told the people of Berbice that he and the PPP also had plans to close some of the estates after he messed up the Skeldon Project and sugar was going bleak. He should not cuss down the private company that wants the Skeldon Estate because the government and people of Guyana will be able to recover some of the monies he misspent on the factory.
We see in all the Caribbean countries and afar that sugar is not viable anymore. But because a majority of the sugar workers are supporting the PPP, this man lies to them just to gain their support. It is my belief that if one or two estates in Berbice is/are to close down, it will not see the majority of the workers losing their jobs. Some will and maybe those are the ones that are feeding the PPP with the wrong news as to what is happening in the industry. Maybe that is why we are hearing of estates being sabotaged also so that the weekly target cannot be achieved at times.
Workers need to understand and be educated as to what is taking place in the industry because the PPP and its leaders are peddling what they think will happen and fabricate stories to gain support. As a resident of Region 5, it is news to me that some of the residents are now claiming that their lands are being taken away for D&I purposes. What I am aware of is that there is a matter in the court pending because two factions that control a cooperative society in the region deem themselves as legal entity.
So if the PPP and Bharrat Jagdeo know of any other matter of land being taken away, tell it to MMA and the Ministry of Agriculture. I implore them to do this as early as possible, so that the farmers can be fully represented. Can the PPP send me the full tape of all the speeches so I can have my say also? This year at Babu Jaan was no different. It was once again a cuss down party and not about Dr. Cheddi Jagan legacy. Well done PPP.
