He cried as he was being escorted from the courtroom of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after a murder charge was read to him.
The 15-year-old Sophia resident had just been remanded to a juvenile holding centre for the murder of Haymant Persaud, the brother of Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud.
The teenager appeared yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where he was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on February 19, at Stabroek Market Square, he killed 51 year-old Haymant Persaud.
Persaud was with another man in the market area, when he was attacked and robbed by the teenager.
According to reports, Persaud of Affiance, Essequibo Coast, was stabbed to death by the 15-year-old who relieved him of his gold chain before making good his escape in a bus.
The lad was arrested last week Friday at his Sophia home. He is reported to have confessed to killing the top cop’s brother.
Haymant Persaud’s body was left lying at the Georgetown Hospital mortuary for close to two weeks before being identified. Police had also sought help from the public with identifying the dead man.
Based on reports, the teen, who was charged before with attempted murder and inflicting grievous bodily harm, was positively identified as the perpetrator during an identification parade.
This case will be called again on March 21.
