The courtroom of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan heard that a businessman and a woman allegedly trafficked a 15-year-old girl for sex work.
Businessman, Mahadsa Thomas and speedboat captain Kenisha Hill were jointly indicted for Trafficking in Person (TIP).
Particulars of the offence alleged that between February 1 and February 24, at Supenaam, Essequibo, they recruited, transported and harboured the minor for the purpose of sexual exploitation. They both pleaded not guilty to the charge and were each released on $500,000 bail.
The brief court hearing was held in-camera at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
According to reports, the 15-year-old girl and a 24-year-old woman were rescued after police in collaboration with the TIP unit raided an area in the region. Following the raid Mahadsa, the owner of a popular shop in the area and Hill were arrested.
Based on information received, the under-aged girl and the woman were rescued at the Airy Hall Bar, where they were reportedly forced to work.
