In attendance was Dr Kaaleshwar Ramcharran, senior Registrar, Orthopedic; Dr David Samaroo, Orthopaedic Consultant; Dr Madan Rambaran, Medical Education; and Mr. Allan Johnson, Chief Executive Officer (GPHC). The ceremony was chaired by Mr. Davteerth Anandjit.
Twelve students from Guyana and two from Belize received their certificates after eleven months of hard work.
According to Dr Kaaleshwar Ramcahrran, the orthopedic training programme which is solely sponsored by the GPHC has improved significantly over the last 20 years. It has moved from just technicians being trained to put on casts, to now being called surgeon’s assistants.
It has also been evident in the past that patients have been arriving at the Georgetown Public Hospital and were not properly immobilized. Because of this the hospital started incorporating students from the regional hospitals and training them.
He also added that the course is of such a high standard that it has been attracting students from the private hospitals as well as foreign countries. “Over the past four years we have had six students from Belize, and we are looking to extend that number in the future.”
“The next step for us is to have this programme certified by the University of Guyana so instead of (GPHC) awarding the certificate, the certificate would be coming from (UG) which will give us a lot more recognition,” Dr Ramcharran said.
Best graduating student, Oswin Rockcliffe, said it was a great journey, and emphasized the fact that they gained more than just knowledge, but also learned to overcome doubt and fears. He also urged his colleagues who are going back to the various regions, to maintain the qualities of being a good technician by providing the best care possible for the patients.
