…Classes to begin in March
The newly elected executive of the Guyana Trades Union Congress which came into being on November 13, 2016 recently visited Linden for a three-day outreach which ended last Friday.
President of the GTUC Coretta Mc Donald said that the GTUC has 18 unions affiliated to it. One such union is the Bauxite Union.
She noted that the first thing the executive thought of doing was to have an outreach throughout Guyana and it was decided that it will be launched in Region Ten.
“It was chosen because we recognized that over the years Region Ten has been a very depressed community—Linden, Ituni, Kwakwani. The flow of information is not readily available.
“In terms of academic advancement, it is not readily available. We took into consideration and we would have noted that in order for persons to have a University degree they have to travel every day from Linden to Georgetown, from Ituni to Georgetown and from Kwakwani to Georgetown.
“Maybe they have to seek refuge with some relative in Georgetown so that they can empower themselves with a first degree or maybe even have a diploma in some area of study. After looking at these issues, we thought that we should come to Region Ten to deal with some of them.
“We knew that we should listen to some of the concerns of the people and try to find ways and means of helping them to cope with some of those issues.”
According to Ms. Mc Donald the Critchlow Labour College which is a part of the GTUC, once had an arm in Linden and the executive decided to resuscitate that establishment and to have the arm operating again in Linden.
“More than just having the arm operating as just offering certificate programmes, we have decided or we have embarked on partnerships with other Universities and so we will be offering University first degrees, we will be offering diplomas as well as master’s degrees to residents.”
Mc Donald claimed that the Degrees and Diplomas will be accredited as they already have the accreditation coming from the various entities in addition to the Universities the National Accreditation Council in Guyana will be accrediting the programmes that are going to be offered by the Universities as well as giving accreditation to the Critchlow Labour College.
She also noted that a payment plan affordable to the citizens desirous of attending Critchlow Labour College will be looked at.
Director of International Programmes at the Critchlow Labour College, Dr. Stanley Paul, the Universities on board are Pearson in the United Kingdom, Charisma University of Turks and Caicos, American Academy of Project Management in the USA, Business and Technology Education Council and the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Dr. Paul also noted that ‘Industrial Relations and Social Studies’ is the flagship course of the College because it is used to gain entry into the University of Guyana and the Cyril Potter College of Education.
The Linden arm of the Critchlow Labour College is expected to begin classes on March 20, 2017 at the Linden Technical Institute.
During the three days outreach programme the executive body met with several entities and individuals at the Linden Technical Institute, Linden Enterprise Network and the Guymine Constabulary Recreational Hall.
Mc Donald said that they met with Mayor Carwyn Holland and they shared their reason for being in the mining town. The issue of Critchlow Labour College returning to Region Ten caused Holland to be more than happy.
He decided that his entity will be on board, fully, with the GTUC. The same sentiments were expressed by the Regional Chairman.
“We met with cleaners, teachers, security guards, taxi drivers and vendors in the market and they all shared their concerns. Most importantly we met with youths and they have given us a real picture of what it is like to live in Linden and not have the kind of academic qualification and how much they are suffering.”
The GTUC President said because of the issues raised in the mining town they have decided that they cannot just stop here, they have to partner or seek partnership or build partnership with other entities.
They also met with Linden Care Foundation an NGO. According to Ms. Mc Donald they are excited about having the partnership with the GTUC in terms of bringing a different flair to the society.
The other members of the GTUC executive at the outreach were General Secretary Lincoln Lewis, Vice President (Mining) Odella Gravesande and Vice President (Education) Collis Nicholson.
