Dear Editor,
If there is one good that has come out of the parking meter fiasco, it is the emergence of a significant body of leadership material drawn from civil society and which from all appearances cuts across the political and ethnic divide.
I will refrain from identifying who these individuals are in order to prevent them being labeled one way or the other. Suffice it to say that they represent varying shades of opinion and interests and are united in a common desire to fight for what they perceive to be just and in the best interest of the city and for that matter the country as a whole. Many of those involved in the protest actions are young professionals, entrepreneurs and concerned citizens which is good for the body politic and the economic and social well-being of this nation.
I applaud these individuals. Life, after all, is much more that satisfying one’s physical and material needs. It is about standing up for principles and for what one considers to be morally and ethically correct. It is about confronting injustice whenever it raises its ugly head. It is about protecting and safeguarding the rule of law and the tenets of good governance. I encourage those involved not to lose hope in the future of this country. As one leading politician in Guyana famously remarked during the difficult period of dictatorial rule, ‘the struggle may be long and hard, but victory is inevitable.’
