Co-founder and Coach of the Guyana Road Runners Track and Field Club, Diallo Jamal Shabazz was returned unopposed as President of the Club last Sunday when it held an Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Floral Creations on Quamina Street, South Cummingsburg, Georgetown.
Javon Rocke (First Vice-President); Corlene Skekel (Second Vice-President); Twana McAlmont (Secretary); Nigel Siland (Treasurer); Marilyn Gibson (Asst. Sect Treasurer); Wince Thomas (Organising Secretary); Delon Grandison (Public Relations Officer) and Committee Members:
Gladstone Hopkinson, Donicia Bess, Debra Douglas, Clifton Thom and Safa Shabazz formed the new Executive of the Club.
The Club Captain is Beyonce Skekel and Vice-Captain, Lennox Whitney. Major General (Retired) Norman McLean holds the position of ‘Patron’. According to a press release from the club, the Returning Officer was Winston St Hill.
The Coaches are Thomas, Shabazz, Siland and Happo Hopkinson.
The following former members were bestowed honorary life membership: Devaun Barrington, Kevin Abbensetts, Siddiqua Shabazz, Carlisa Atkinson, Dawud Shabazz, Virlyn Gibson, Daniel Benjamin, Jonathon Fagundes and Patrick Bobb.
According to the press release, the Club intends to stage a recruitment drive to enroll male and female athletes from Albouystown, Sophia, Agricola and Tiger Bay areas. Shabazz expressed his gratitude to several entities and individuals for the support the Club has received over the years.
Those include McLean, Larry London, Dr. Carl ‘Max’ Hanoman, Director of De Sinco Trading, Frank DeAbreu, Mohamed’s Enterprise and Director of Banks (D.I.H), George McDonald.
“For positive changes in Track & Field, Administrators and Coaches need to put aside egos, personal ambition and more importantly our differences and get to work, communicating and agreeing on putting Track & Field first and club and self, second,” the release said. “People don’t care how much you know until they see how much you care”, it added.
