As investigations continue into the murder of Shereffudeen Nazamudeen, who was allegedly beaten to death at Good Hope, East Bank Essequibo Tuesday night, Divisional Commander, Leslie James says that two persons are in custody.
James said that the two persons were held based on information ranks received during the course of the murder investigations.
Alliance for Change Councilor, Mandy Sukhdeo and her father, Surendra Sukhdeo are in custody.
It is alleged that Nazamudeen, a fisherman of Ruby, EBE, grabbed a bag from Sukhdeo and attempted to run when she called out for her father and informed him that the 22-year-old-man attempted to steal her bag.
Kaieteur News was informed that her father and another relative armed themselves with pieces of wood and dealt the young fisherman several lashes after tying him up.
Nazamudeen was pronounced dead at the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was taken by the police.
The victim’s family has since claimed that both suspects and victim grew up in the same village and the young man might have been playing a joke on the woman.
According to information received, the fisherman sought refuge in a burnt building after being chased around the village by the councilor’s father.
He was beaten to death shortly after he jumped off the burnt property where an elderly rice farmer Mohamed Munir and his wife, Bibi Jamila Munir, were slain last April. Nazamudeen is the brother of one of the accused in the murder of the elderly couple.
A photograph provided to Kaieteur News shows the shirtless man standing on a shed in the Munir’s property. Another photograph shows him lying motionless on the parapet.
A resident told Kaieteur News that she was sitting outside her house when she saw the man running into the burnt out property, with occupants in a vehicle in pursuit. The man then clambered up on a shed and began cursing. He eventually climbed down, only to be caught and beaten. She said that she later learnt that he had died.
Investigations are going.
