Management of Giftland Office Max, the Town Clerk of the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown (M&CC) and other City officials, on Friday reached an agreement with regards to the usage of a disputed access road leading to
the multibillion-dollar investment at Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara.
Public Relations Consultant of the Mall, Elsena Seecharan, issued a release on behalf of the company.
The release reads:
“On Friday 10th February at 3PM, there was a meeting between the Town Clerk Royston King & the Chief Engineer Colvern Venture for the M&CC and Peter Abdool , Roy Beepat and Dale Beresford of Optimum Safety for the Giftland Mall.
At the heart of the matter, was the safety concern for the Mall clients and the reckless manner in which the residents of the Boyer Development were using the roads. Mr. Abdool explained that due to the fact that the road was not gazetted, the Mall was responsible for the insurance, street marking, paving, parapets, street lighting and maintenance of the access roadways.
Presently the City would not be able to assume the additional responsibility of upkeeping the roads, and Giftland would continue to maintain, monitor and control traffic to ensure that a free flow of traffic is maintained as was being done before last week’s intervention by the City.”
The release also stated that the action taken by the Town Clerk in removing the signs were hasty, and an apology was extended for not being able to contact Mr. Beepat to sort the matter out prior to the action being taken of the” forceful removal” of the Mall property – which the Chief Engineer has promised to return.
“Mr. Beepat stated that it is always his intention to work peacefully with the City and regretted that Mr. King, whom he has a long and cordial relationship with, and Mr. Venture, had not been able to resolve this issue prior to the actions (taken) last week and hoped that in the future, a closer working relationship would develop for any other issues.”
Two Fridays ago, the City Engineer’s Department removed barriers and signs and other related materials from what they deemed as a “public road” located on the western side of Mall. This action resulted in the owners of the Mall crying foul, accusing the M&CC of abusing its authority. The mall claimed also, that heavily-armed ranks from M&CC, without any notice, descended on the facility and “unlawfully” removed signs and barriers along the access roads and parking area.
Roy Beepat, in a statement on that day, had opined that the M&CC was flexing its muscles at the behest of a number of persons living in a new housing area located aback of his property.
