We are surprised that with the danger of “false news” being discussed around the world, the Stabroek News could fall victim to such cynical nonsense. The Stabroek News has accused the Kaieteur News of publishing two letters that were exclusively sent to it.
Editor-in-Chief Anand Persaud has to be the most disrespectful person in Guyana. He pens the letter of complaint then proceeds to print the diatribe no sooner had he sent the letter of complaint to Adam Harris. It stated that this conclusion was arrived at after the two letter writers complained. First, we are handicapped in our response because we do not have the identification of names or the two letters to go on.
Secondly, the Kaieteur News is factually the paper with the largest circulation, therefore our receipt of letters is enormous. Many letters have a long waiting period for publication. Some do not see the light of day.
Thirdly, every major name in Guyana in the security sector, Cabinet, political society, business community, civil society, municipal government, youth, diplomatic community, and NGOs send us letters. We cannot conceive of a situation where a letter goes to Stabroek News being of special importance from a major player in Guyana and would not be sent to the leading newspapers.
Fourthly, it would be of interest to the reading public to know the contents of the two letters in question. Are they of such import, the nature of which Kaieteur News has never been in possession of, so we felt Guyanese should see them and whether we stole them. This is bordering on the eerie, the unbelievable and the incredible. We say without fear of contradiction, no one would believe such a ghost story.
Fifthly, we thought it would have been the professional thing to do for SN to have supplied us with its evidence.
Finally, it is unacceptable that in a modern world of fantastic use of the internet, the Stabroek News does not understand that someone’s published correspondence could be taken by another person, put in Microsoft word and be sent out to a newspaper. There are millions of examples of this with which the Stabroek News should be familiar.
We end on a rather proud note; we do not think we would ever be in a position that we are so starved for news and letters that we would have to steal from other newspapers. Our circulation and track record are graphic facts for the entire Guyana to see; they speak for themselves
