Although he expressed remorse for his actions, 18-year-old Rickford Marcus will be sentenced to imprisonment later this month for a robbery. The teenager appeared yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and pleaded guilty to a charge which stated that on January 17, in Georgetown, while in the company of others, he robbed Ricardo Mohabir of a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 cellular phone valued $150,000, and a wallet among other items.
Marcus told Magistrate Leron Daly that he resorted to robbing people because he was laid off from his job and had no luck finding employment. He further stated that his girlfriend is pregnant and he had to get money to do “certain things.”
“You cannot steal people’s things like that. It is unacceptable behaviour”, Magistrate Daly said to him in a stern tone. The Magistrate told him that she will jail him after the findings of the probation report are presented in court.
Marcus will make his next appearance on February 28.
Meanwhile, in another case, a 17-year-old was remanded to prison after pleading not guilty to a similar offence.
Darrel Kennedy of Perry Street, Tucville, Georgetown, was slapped with two counts of robbery under-arms. It is alleged that on February 3, at Main Street, Georgetown, while armed with a knife, he robbed Ivor Alleyne of a wrist watch valued $1,500.
It is further alleged that on the same day at Main Street, Georgetown, while armed with a knife, he robbed Abigail Nelson of a Blu cell phone valued $22,000 and 12,000 cash.
The unrepresented defendant told the court that he was never convicted. He further stated that he has no pending matters before the court.
Police Prosecutor Christopher Morris opposed bail, citing the nature of the offence and penalty attached to the charge. Bail was refused and Kennedy will make another court appearance on February 20, for statements.
