Kapil Haresh Thakurian was yesterday jailed for five years and fined $237,600,000 for trafficking some 194 pounds of cocaine.
The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Leron Daly at the conclusion of a trial in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
On August 9, 2016, Thakurian, 32, of 533 14th Street, Foulis, East Coast Demerara and of 20 Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, was found with the cocaine hidden in seafood at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
Police, in a statement, said that ranks from the Narcotics Branch intercepted a cargo shipment of 35 boxes of seafood, eight of which contained a total of 88.2 kilograms of cocaine.
Thakurian’s lawyer Peter Hugh had told the court that his client had no knowledge of the illicit drug. Police Inspector Bharat Mangru represented the prosecution.
