Roy Bishwah, 32, of 151 Bagotville, West Bank Demerara, was yesterday fined $30,000 or in default seven days imprisonment by Magistrate Madan Kissoon, when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on a charge of obstructing traffic.
It is alleged that the defendant on October 27 last, at the Stabroek Market, drove his vehicle and caused the said vehicle to remain at rest in such a manner which caused the obstruction to free flow of traffic.
At the sitting of the Night Court the Magistrate told the court that he was satisfied with the evidence that the Prosecution lead in the trial.
Kissoon further stated that a Prima Facie case had been made out against the defendant and thus he was found guilty of the offence.
When the defendant was asked if he wanted to say anything before the ruling, the man replied
“I took a load of passengers to drop them off and after that I just try to ease my head a bit. When I rise up I see the police and they told me to go at the station. When I reach there they told me that I am arrested and told me that I was parked badly that’s all. You and I both know how the Police does behave.’’
When the Magistrate asked Bishwah why he was not showing up for court he stated, “I was in prison all the time because I get charged in another court for obstruction of traffic. All this time I was in prison and they did not want to bring me to court even though I told them that I have to come and see you.”
The Magistrate in his ruling told Bishwah that if he failed to pay the fine he will be sentence to seven days imprisonment which will run concurrently to the time that he is already spending.
The father of four after hearing what the Magistrate said, in return stated “I don’t have money because I was not working and is four children I have to take care of.”
