Dear Editor,
One boasts of never in his entire life putting a cigarette to his mouth – as if he is the only one. Another boasts of not eating meat for over the last 20/30 years. Still says; “I have never once drank alcohol”. Good for them but what’s the catch?
While these “Nevers” are healthy habits, they are not state of the art requirements for being a good person. Health wise its good, taking care of the body – the temple as some would say is a personal virtue, it’s for one’s own sake. But having a healthy body does not automatically qualify and transfer one into a virtuous person.
Tell me again, but I like to remind folks of Adolph Hitler: didn’t smoke, didn’t drink, no personal aggrandizement, non-corrupt-though his mind was all that and more don’ts and yet for all that who was he if not the devil incarnate.
I have noted overtime many individuals who are fanatical about their personal well-being, the purity of their body are seldom the nice people. Does the purity of one’s physiology makes one a paragon of virtue!? The question must be what is their quality of contribution to society? How do they treat fellow men?
I came across a wonderful quotation which says the true test of one’s character is seen in the way in which he treats others who he has nothing to gain from or those who can’t fight back – check that out.
Do they look out and reach out to the less fortunate? Are they their brothers/sisters keepers? Do they self-deny for the sake of a stranger? Do they stand-up for principle as a matter of right/wrong? Does injustice gnaw their conscience? Do they face up to and stand tall to the ruling authority for what they know to be wrong?
Editor, upon these and such like other question, these boastful, egotistic narcissists must be judged and scored, see what they really are at the core. Many would be shocked out of their skin to discover how terrible some of these people are – would even make God look real bad, that they too are of his creation. There are people who carry with them an evil spirit and don’t know. We all are born for different reasons, like Fidel Castro once said; “some people are born with a baser instinct”.
And if you pay keen attention you can know them, for there is a way, a pattern how they move which they can’t help, since they don’t dictate their steps and so can’t avoid doing certain things. It is all involuntary; that’s why some people get badly harmed.
Editor, those with abysmally wicked intentions cannot totally veil them, for once that energy starts activating and is set in motion then it takes control of them and is registered on their looks. If you know how to look you wouldn’t miss it, oh yes, believe me! I conclude therefore that – a healthy mind and a healthy body is not always packed together.
There are countless examples of those who are fanatical about keeping their body in fine shape, picky about their diet, live on the tread-mill but fall short miserably in living up to the virtues of humanity.
