Police Sergeant, Kamal Pitama, a key prosecution witness in the trial of Mary Ann Lionel and Shamella Inderjali, who allegedly offered him $4M cash to suppress evidence against Marcus Bisram, who is wanted for murder, gave conflicting reports on whether he took video footage of the transaction.
Lionel, 25, and Inderjali, 45, the mother of Bisram, both of Number 70 Village Corentyne, Berbice were charged last November, for attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Lionel’s father, Harripaul Parsram, 49, of Lot 164 Number 71 Village, Corentyne, Berbice is charged along with Orlando Dickie, 39, of Stevedore Housing Scheme, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown; Radesh Motie, 39, an excavator operator, of Lot 124 Number 78 Village Corentyne, Berbice; Diadath Datt, 18, of Lot 98 Number 71 Village, Corentyne, Berbice; Niran Yacoob, 37, of Lot 65 Number 67 Village, Corentyne Berbice for the murder of Faiyaz Narinedatt, the Berbice carpenter.
Bisram’s name was also mentioned in the joint murder charge as the number one accused. The joint charge further stated that Bisram procured Dickie, Motie, Datt, Parsram and Yacoob to murder Narinedatt.
The charge against Lionel and Inderjali alleges that on November 19, at Eve Leary, Georgetown, they contacted Sergeant Pitama and offered him $4M in cash to forego charges against the five murder accused (Dickie, Motie, Datt, Parsram and Yacoob) who were at the time in custody pending investigation into the matter.
Bisram was out of the country at the time.
They were each released on $1.5M bail and will make another court appearance on February 13.
They were also ordered to lodge their passports and report to the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters (CID) Eve Leary, Georgetown and the Springlands Police Station.
When Sergeant Pitama, a detective attached to the Major Crimes Investigation Unit, was cross examined on Thursday by Attorney Sanjeev Datadin, he stated that he did not take video recording of Lionel handing over the bag of money to him.
However, when further questioned, the attorney asked Sergeant Pitama if he knew that it was a criminal offence for him to lie under oath. The police witness replied in the affirmative and revealed that he indeed captured video footage of when the monies were handed over to him, using his personal cell phone.
Sergeant Pitama further said that he recorded same for his personal business.
But Sergeant Pitama admitted to the attorney that he was not doing personal business at the time of him making the recording. The police witness then stated that he would be able to identify the recording if he sees it again.
According to Sergeant Pitama, Lionel told him, “This is the money, de four million dollars fuh (you people) loose meh daddy (Harripaul Parsram) and the rest of dem man and not fuh lock up Marcus (Bisram) when he come.”
In his evidence in chief, Sergeant Pitama never stated that he videoed the transaction on his personal cell phone. This evidence only came out when he faced intense cross examination.
During his testimony, Sergeant Pitama recalled being approached by two women, who wanted him to loose people in custody.
The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has issued a wanted bulletin for Bisram.
US attorneys for Bisram in a statement have promised to cooperate with Guyanese authorities.
According to reports, on the day of the killing, Bisram had a party at his home, which Narinedatt and a few others attended. At some point Narinedatt went to the back of the yard to urinate.
Bisram, Head of the Marcus Bisram Foundation, allegedly followed Narinedatt and began making sexual advances towards him.
It was reported that Narine slapped and pushed him away.
It was then the rejected man allegedly instructed his friends to kill Narinedatt. It was reported that the overseas-based Guyanese told his friends he would ensure they are not caught.
Kaieteur News understands that several men beat Narinedatt at the businessman’s premises.
He was then taken to a roadway and beaten until he fell into a drain.
They reportedly took the carpenter by vehicle to Number 70 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, where they dumped the body and drove over it with a car to make it appear like a road accident.
