The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) recertified the Eureka Medical Laboratory under
its Laboratory Certification Programme after the laboratory continued to meet the requirements of the Guyana Standard (GYS 170) – General requirements for the operation of a Laboratory.
The Laboratory is located at Thomas Street, North Cummingsburg. A laboratory certification is the process by which a third party gives written assurance and recognition that a laboratory is conforming to specified requirements.
Yesterday, the renewal certificate with a validation of two years was presented by the Head of Conformity Assessment Department for GNBS, Rodlyn Semple, to the Managing Director of Eureka Medical Laboratory, Andrew Boyle.
Boyle strongly believes that GNBS has supported and kept the Laboratory on a path of quality and continual improvement.
Semple expressed satisfaction that Eureka continues to maintain conformance to the requirements of the national standard despite its Accreditation to the ISO 15189 (international) standard.
The GNBS determines whether laboratories involved in testing, measurement and or calibration activities are satisfying the criteria outlined in the National Standard through its National Laboratory Certification programme.
Laboratories which conform to the requirements of this standard are provided with formal recognition that they have implemented a laboratory management system, thus providing quality assurance for customers as they identify and select reliable testing or calibration services to meet their needs. GNBS also carries out surveillance and monitoring activities during the period of certification to ensure that laboratories are maintaining the system.
The recertification of Eureka Medical Laboratory has kept it among the group of certified medical laboratories in Guyana. These include St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Laboratory, GPHC Medical Laboratories, Dr. Balwant Singh Hospital Laboratory, Medical Arts Centre Laboratory, Georgetown Medical Centre, Quest Medical Centre Laboratory and Woodlands Hospital Laboratory.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GNBS, Lloyd David said that the National Standard allows labs to develop a comprehensive management system which will enable them to issue accurate, reliable and consistent test results.
The certification allows the laboratories to determine whether they are performing their work correctly and to the appropriate standards.
David added, “Laboratories can further be accredited to International Standards. He explained that other countries can send samples to Guyana to be tested and know that the results will be internationally recognized.”
