As the rains came in its might only the road race segment were possible at the seventh annual Desmond Dorsett Memorial Road Race classic and fun day slated for last Sunday at the No53 Sports Complex on the Corentyne.
As the road race culminated, the rains came with a vengeance leaving the organisers with no other choice, but to call the activity for the rest of the day off.
However, the road race came off with a bang with over 35 athletes drawn mainly from the Police Youth Clubs across Berbice taking to the road.
It was held in a number of categories including males and females Open, U19 and U15. The Senior and U19 athletes cover a distance of five KM, beginning at the No43 Village, while the U15 and the females began their segment at No 47 Village, covering a distance of three KM. They all finished at the popular No53 Sports Complex Corentyne.
The overall winner was Delroy Leitch as he won the male Open category from Demarcus Williams. The top U19 male runner was Austin Gray with Devon Joseph second, Thaddeaus Donald third and Enoch Rutherford fourth. In the female category Swarswattie Matadeen placed first with Naomi Bourne second.
Among the U15 runners Deandre Shabazz ran away from his opponents with Jahvon Angel second, while Jahiel Jeffrey came in third ahead of Nigel Prince who placed fourth.
The first female to cross the finish line was Lisa Douglas.
The outstanding performers were presented with cash, trophies, medals, ribbons, T- Shirts and other memorabilia compliments of the Dorsett Family of No50 Village, Leeds Corentyne, Berbice and other well-wishers. Certificates of appreciation and participation were presented to all the participants. The top finishers from the Leeds, No51, Union, No53 catchment areas were presented with special prizes.
According to Coordinator Miss Waveney Dorsett the fun day will be held on a later date during the year.
A native of East Canje, the late Superintendent Desmond Dorsett worked mostly as a detective during his tenor in the Guyana Police Force. He was an ardent sports fan who participated in numerous sporting activities including Cricket and athletics. Dorsett migrated after retiring and returned with his family from time to time to do charity and community work.
His wife Waveney Dorsett, a retired head mistress, and community activist continues in the same vein and is the spearhead of the activity. She can be contacted on telephone numbers 339-4475, 339-4133 and 339-4436 for further information.
