Dear Editor,
Is the new U.S. president the self-made millionaire he’s often rumored to be? Far from it. Donald Trump was born into wealth and, for the most part, never had to answer to anyone except his daddy. In his mind, he’s the smartest man alive. He toots his own horn and, having been accustomed to having his own way running his “empire,” takes advice from no one. As he has boasted before, he is his best adviser. Keep in mind this is a businessman who has declared bankruptcy several times. His business is a ship that has left in its wake too many (for want of a better word) “swindled” small business people who had provided him with service and goods for which payment was reneged. He’s far from being the best and brightest businessman he projects himself to be.
Now he’s at the helm of the world’s most powerful country and, instead of being concerned with the business of the nation, he has been preoccupied with the large size or lack thereof of the crowd present at his inauguration. After nit-picking about whether or not his or Obama’s inauguration crowd was bigger he proceeded to the next item on the list. Next up was the looming matter, in his mind, of Hilary actually beating him in the popular vote by three million. He then goes into a hissy-fit and coughs up the fallacy that there were three million illegal votes which, I suppose, explains Hilary’s surplus in the popular vote tally.
Next on the menu was living up to the idiotic promise to build a wall on the Mexican/American border to keep immigrants out. Nevermind walls can be flown over or dug under, this president seems to think it prudent that this is the best way to keep out illegal immigrants. He is willing to scrap the so-called Obamacare which benefits millions, claiming it is too expensive. Yet, he’s willing to throw billions behind this potential white elephant of a wall. Given his apparent allergy to things academic (as in his refusal to do his homework when daily presidential briefs are presented to him) it is doubtful this president is aware of the length of the border between the U.S. and Mexico (it is just under 2000 miles). Doubtful am I also that he knows a part of the border is the Rio Grande River.
I’m yet to see a wall built in a river. But then again, he’s promised to do the impossible so maybe he knows what he’s doing. The conceited and impertinent statement that Mexico is going to pay for such a monstrosity and trying to muscle Mexico into doing so is foolhardy. Like the bully he is, Trump mistakenly thinks Mexico is at the mercy of the United States. He has threatened to slap a tariff on Mexican imports if they refuse to pony up for his silly wall. The fact is, should this be done, it is American consumers who will be paying a higher price. Is he aware of how much America depends on exports to Mexico? What if Mexico decides to do the same to American imports? A trade war with Mexico would only result in higher prices for American consumers and loss of American jobs should Mexico raise tariffs on American goods.
He then proceeds to wade into the deep waters of immigration without his life-saving rubber ducky attached. The United States of America is now turning her back on Muslims fleeing their homeland where war is waged on innocent civilians. Women and children who are barrel-bombed and maimed daily are turned away even after they have landed in the U.S. Contrast this with Canada’s open-arm response by welcoming the very same people that are being turned away by the United States.
It is no surprise the rest of the world sees Canada in a more loving light than they do the U.S. Americans are wonderful and kind people but their government gives the world a bad impression of them. From the birth of the United States she has always been a safe haven for the persecuted. Its constitution protects such groups. Here is a president who thinks he’s above the law and believes he can keep bigoted campaign promises like banning all Muslim immigrants.
President Trump needs to realize running a country is not the same as running his relatively puny companies. Unlike in his so-called empire, he is answerable to others and cannot throw his substantial weight around and fire people who disagree with him. Given the road he has chosen to travel, the slogan for the statue of liberty will soon be amended
