Luis Cuperteno and his wife were admitted to $200,000 bail on a narcotic charge for which facts stated that they had some six pounds of marijuana concealed in their home at Moca Moca Village, Rupununi, Region Nine.
Cupertino, 29, and Felecia Mandokin, 18, allegedly had 3Kg of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking in their home on January 23.
The couple pleaded not guilty to the charge read to them on Tuesday by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that the police received certain information and went to the home of the defendants and carried out a search during which the narcotics was found.
According to Jones, Cupertino told police that his brother left the bag containing the drug at his home.
Attorney Jerome Khan, during an application for bail, argued that his clients had no possession or knowledge of the drug. He said that police are still trying to locate Cupertino’s brother, the prime suspect, in their investigations.
The lawyer revealed Cupertino told police that the drug belonged to his sibling. During his bail petition, Khan asked the court to consider the fiction that several persons have access to the home and that the narcotics could have belonged to anybody. This the lawyer contended, should be considered as special reasons, and also the fact that the prime suspect is still on the run.
Meanwhile, in another case, a 42-year-old mechanic was granted bail for break and enter and larceny when he also appeared before the Chief Magistrate.
It is alleged that on January 24, at Takuba Landing, Essequibo River, Wayne Yaw broke into the business place of Andrew Perreira, and stole a quantity of phone cards, three cellular phones among other items to the value of $742,000.
Yaw, of Fyrish, Corentyne, Berbice pleaded not guilty to the allegation and was released on $120,000 bail. He will return to court on February 16, at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
Prosecutor Jones did not opposed to the defendant being released on bail. The prosecutor informed the court that $330,000 and two of the cell phones were recovered in the defendant’s possession.
