President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), K. A. Juman Yassin on Monday last informed
that the request by the Olympic body to its affiliates for submission of their work programmes leading up to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, has been slow.
Up to the time of the GOA press conference on Monday last, only two affiliates of the body’s 23 affiliates had submitted theirs. The deadline for submission of those programmes was January 31st, 2017, yesterday and Yassin was hopeful that the other affiliates would have complied before the deadline.
”Once we get that, then all of those applications will be looked at either by a subcommittee but a final decision would be made by the executive of the GOA as regards how we move forward.”
Commonwealth Games
With the Commonwealth Games set for the Gold Coast, Australia, April 2018, the GOA has already began to put systems in place to ensure that Guyana is in good stead in order to medal.
Yassin reported that they are hoping to field a team of about 30 athletes and former GOA Executive Member Noel Adonis has been appointed as Chef de Mission.
Committee to recommend Training Programmes
A committee headed by recently elected Vice President Godfrey Munroe has been appointed to look at and recommend to the Executive of the GOA, programmes that the local body can approach Olympic Solidarity to fund.
Apart from Munroe, the other members are Nicholas Fraser and Seon Erskine. “We felt that this is a committee of wide experience, especially two of them, Fraser and Erskine who have got a degree in sports science from Cuba. We hope that they would be able to make proposals for courses.”
Queens Baton Relay
The Queens Baton is expected to be in Guyana from August 7-11. Yassin said that Dr. Karen Pilgrim who has been in charge of the activities surrounding the Queens Baton Relay would continue to serve at the helm.
”On the 8th the baton would be in Georgetown and the 9th somewhere out of Georgetown as is the norm.”
New GOA Headquarters
The entity is hoping to start occupying this new edifice by the end of March this year Yassin reported. Captain John Flores, President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation has been appointed the head of security, he would be responsible for making recommendations to the GOA in this regard.
Flores would also be in charge of security for the Queens Baton Relay. At the new building, the GOA would be setting up a museum; a committee headed by Mr. Ronald Burch Smith has been set up to forward recommendations to the GOA regarding the setting up of the museum.
”Ronald is now looking at that and he would also recommend to us other person (s) who he feels can make a contribution to this. If there is any member of the sporting fraternity who feel that they can make a contribution, I would ask them to get in contact with me or our general secretary, Hector Edwards and we would see how best your recommendation and your input can be developed into this museum.”
