Jan 31, 2017 Letters
Dear Editor,
We reply to an article dated January 28, 2017 under the caption, “Loud Music may have caused the death of an elderly man.” This letter which professes to come from angry and frustrated residents, (we must add) can only have come from one resident who is out to affect the operations of a legitimate business. In the first instance, this sports bar is not operated by a police officer but rather it is a family bar which has been in operations for over (9) nine years.
This sports bar over the years has moved from a family business to a community business in which many residents who are unemployed would every Friday vend and sell a variety of foods which allows for the maintenance of their families. The Friday night lime which has grown from a community venture sees persons from all walks of life coming to support and to relax after a full week of work.
It is expected that some people don’t like to see others progress and become successful. Any attempt to misinform the authorities and the public must at this time be condemned and a call is being made for an investigation, by the many families in Middle Street, Pouderoyen who are employed at this said sports facility. Further, the operation of this sports business has always been in accordance with the laws of Guyana. There have not been any violations of the law and the licenses were granted under the laws of this land. In over two (2) years the police have conducted regular patrols and stop and search operations and we call on the author of the letter to prove the accusation of drugs. This type of false and inaccurate information must be met with the strongest opposition.
Moreover one finds this type of negative propaganda worrying since it is the family/owners who would clean the entire street, funded street lights, helped over fifty (50) children to school each term, fed the elderly, also provided sports gear and uniforms for the Pouderoyen Football Club monthly, and the list goes on.
We further call upon the author of that misleading article to prove that an elderly man died as a result of loud music. It is indeed true that an elderly man died in the community but this elderly man died about two years ago and that we know of no other elderly person who died during the starting of the Friday night event.
Finally, we find it quite worrying that someone will go this length to misinform the public knowing full well that their information is false. Such a writer must therefore be bold enough to identify him or herself and not hide behind the covering of “angry and frustrated residents”, and if this one person wishes to have such a community event closed then suggest alternative employment for the over sixty persons that will be affected.
Concerned Resident
