Dear Editor,
The second half of 2016 to present has been rather tumultuous for those elected by the people to serve their interest, above everything else. The city council’s imposed parking meter, 14% vat on water and electricity are among recent measures that are irritating the wider populace.
From all appearances, the people, not the opposition, have been airing their displeasure privately and publicly. But our lords and masters are trying so desperately, without success, to drown the houses of disquiet with implausible justifications.
Why is it that the powers that be cannot hear the cries of the populace? Are they so preoccupied believing that this disquiet will soon subside and people will return to life as usual. Or don’t they ever bear before “their eyes” that the privilege of government (power) does not give them the divine right to think they only know what is best for the people?
How can a Cabinet comprised of less than two dozen know that what is right for the 750,000 of us, not in the corridors of state house, government offices and parliament? Or have they quickly forgotten in whose hands real power lies? The power to vote as well as power to veto.
One little quote from Henry Clay, late US lawyer, statesman and planter will suffice as a timely reminder to our nation’s current leadership; “Government is a trust and the Officers are Trustees. And both the trust and trustee are created for the benefit of the people.” I believe that late American President Thomas Jefferson explains our present leadership dilemma: “Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then be trusted with the government of others or have we found angels in the form of ‘kings’ to govern him? Let history answer this question.”
