A young Corriverton, Corentyne couple suffered a setback on Saturday after a fire of unknown origin destroyed their one bedroom apartment.
Nineteen-year-old Vanie Sooknandan, who occupied the home with her husband, 19-year-old Raj Ramnarine, an Estate worker told Kaieteur News that the fire started around 08:00 hrs.
She recounted that after locking up the home, located at Number 78 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, she retreated outside to await her husband’s return, only to receive news that her home was on fire.
The distraught woman rushed home and saw her entire apartment engulfed in flames.
“I lock up the place and go outside to wait on my husband to come home from wuk and like 10 minutes after, me neighbour run and call me seh me place get fire. When I run go see, is all over get fire, we nah get fah save nothing”.
Kaieteur News was told that neighbours quickly formed a bucket brigade to prevent the fire, suspected to have started in the kitchen, from spreading to other homes.
According to neighbours, when the fire service arrived on the scene an hour after they were called, the blaze was already extinguished.
They were unable to salvage anything.
According to the woman, nothing was alight in the home so they are baffled as to what could have caused the fire.
“Me nah leff nothing on. No stove, no candle, no nothing. So how this fire could start just suh? We nah get fah save nothing. Neighbour give me clothes to wear and I don’t wuk no way, is just me husband does wuk”.
The couple suffered an estimated $500,000 in losses as the apartment contained the basic household items.
Contemplating their next move, Sooknandan said “if government or anybody could help us, we would be grateful cause we have nothing left. Anything people want to donate we can tek, cause right now we staying with neighbors.”
When Kaieteur News arrived at the No. 78 Corriverton village home, family members were seen sifting through the debris for possible valuables.
