After more than five years, there appears to be some effort to complete construction at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The Central Police Station (CPS) was torn down under the then PPP administration, amid plans to have it rebuilt.
However, the station, which is the main operating centre for ‘B’ Division, is still unfinished and abandoned for about three years.
Recently, some work recommenced with the outer walls being painted and some electrical wiring being done. However not much is known about the scope of working being done or who is undertaking the exercise.
In the meanwhile the ranks are still forced to work in a small office which was built to facilitate court staff.
According to a prominent resident, it is baffling how police officers stationed at the CPS are able to function under such dispiriting and abysmal conditions for such a long time.
The Criminal Investigation Department is still located in a house next door. That building has now become dilapidated.
Recently, the Ministry of National Security published a list of Police Stations to be built or rehabilitated, but no mention was made of the CPS.
Prisoners bound for the Central Police Station are forced to be transported to far off locations like Reliance, Sisters and Albion Police Stations.
The rebuilding process started and stopped during the era of former Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, during the PPP era.
The building was once taken over by goats and other animals which from time to time found it to be a jolly resting and play place.
