– Lawyer claims No. 1 accused receiving death threats
The three men, who were arrested at a house in Campbellville, Georgetown last weekend, in connection with a raid conducted by members of the Guyana Police Force, where guns and ammunition were reportedly found, appeared
yesterday before Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Teon Alleyne, 30, of Soesdyke Highway, Andre Pollydore, 24, of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, and Lloyd Roberts, 36, of North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, were slapped with four charges each – two for illegal possession of firearms and two for illegal possession of ammunition.
The court heard that on January 22 at 81 John Street Campbellville, Georgetown, the men had in their possession two weapons – one being an AK-47 rifle and one 9mm pistol – without being holders of firearm licence.
It is also alleged that on the same day, the men had in their possession 60 rounds of 7.62 by 39 ammunition and 20 rounds of 9mm ammunition while they were not owners of firearm licence.
The accused pleaded not guilty to all the charges after they were read to them by the Magistrate.
The three defendants were represented by Attorney–at–Law Nigel Hughes who first asked that bail be granted to the number one defendant (Roberts). Hughes told the court that Roberts does not reside at the said address where the search was carried out and the articles were not discovered on him.
Hughes further stated that his client only arrived at the location a few minutes before the police, after he received a phone call stating that he should go and uplift some documents sent for him by an overseas relative.
Hughes said that shortly after Roberts’ arrival at the location, members of the Guyana Police Force arrived and arrested him while he was sitting in the living room.
Hughes also told the court that his client over the past three months had been subjected to death threats which were related to his line of work in the gold industry, and under that circumstance, he asked that bail be granted to his client.
The court also heard that Roberts’ wife and children have also been receiving death threats, and he had been advised to make a report to the Police.
Police Prosecutor Sean Blackman gave three reasons why he objected to bail for Roberts.
Firstly, when the police arrived at the location, they made contact with the three defendants and Roberts gave an oral statement in which he revealed “I am responsible for everything. I rent the house.”
Secondly, Roberts is not licenced to carry a firearm and neither is he permitted to carry any ammunition.
Lastly, Blackman stated that he strongly objected to bail being granted based on the seriousness of the offence and the punishment it attracts.
Facts presented by the Prosecutor stated that on the day in question, police ranks were conducting a search at the said location and after raiding the house the articles were found and the defendants were arrested and charged.
After bail was refused for his client, Hughes asked that Roberts be placed in another holding facility rather than the Georgetown Prison, since there may be plans to exterminate him.
Blackman also objected to bail for the other two defendants – Alleyne, a father of three and Pollydore, father of two – also citing the seriousness of the offence and the punishment it attracts.
For those reasons, bail was refused and the three men were all remanded. They will make their next court appearance on February 14.
