It was a fight back at its best – ‘old man river’ rolled on gathering momentum as
Chanderpaul, a walking run machine and urged on by a raucous Guyanese contingent in the stands, took the Jaguars closer and closer to an improbable win with a magnificent and expertly compiled second century at this level and 13th List A cricket after the Guyana Franchise had been rocked on the ropes at 14-4.
Earlier, Chadwick Walton stroked a beautiful 82 from 84 balls decorated with six fours and four sixes, Devon Thomas’ patient unbeaten 56 from 74 balls with just three fours and a solid 42 from 59 balls with two fours and two sixes to rally the Scorpions to 249-8.
Raymon Reifer, Veerasammy Permaul and the economical Steven Jacobs captured two wickets each for Jaguars who never recovered from their horrendous start and fell for 208 from 44 overs despite a wonderful 101 from 96 balls with 12 fours and a six from Chanderpaul.
Reifer (25) added 77 with the elder statesman while Anthony Bramble made 29 with four fours and put together 54 with Chanderpaul for sixth wicket before Jacobs (19) added 44 for the 7th wicket with the evergreen Chanderpaul before Jacobs was out hit wicket off Jerome Taylor with 61 needed from 61 balls as Jaguars lost by 41 runs.
Taylor finished with a career best 5-40 and got support from Reynard Leveridge 3-38 while Walton had five catches behind the stumps to add to his 82. Shemron Hetymer (1) was bowled by the lively soldier Reynard Leveridge,
while Fudadin (3) and Skipper Leon Johnson (0) were both bowled by Man-of-the-Match Taylor while Leveridge got rid of Barnwell (1) leaving the Jaguars tottering at 14-4.
Chanderpaul, who began his 95th regional 50 overs game needing 133 to pass Bajan Floyd Reifer’s 2,878 runs to become the leading run scorer in Regional one day cricket, held up the contest to have the lights and the commercial Boards to either side of the sightscreen turned off since the glare was affecting him.
When Barnwell’s poor form at the Regional level continued with him being well taken for one off Leveridge, there was a 59-minute delay due to the malfunctioning of three of the four lights as a result of issues with the back-up generator.
Play resumed at 19:00hrs and Chanderpaul top edged Taylor over slip then rocked and swatted him to the mid-wicket boundary in the same over and pulled Leveridge for another boundary. His partnership grew to 50 with Reifer, who played a wonderful supporting role and Chanderpaul found the gap with immaculate precession, bisecting the fielders at point and cover in Larry Gomes fashion to register his sixth boundary.
He soon reached his 60th Regional 50-over fifty but with the demise of Refier, caught behind off Jacobs for 25 at 91-5 things looked bleak for the South Americans. Bramble took the attack to the bowlers and the large Guyanese

contingent screamed their support with every run scored but when Bramble who scored 29 (4×4) was taken by the Keeper off Campbell, Jacobs joined Chanderpaul but was dismissed in unusual circumstances and the game was almost done and dusted despite the heroics of Chanderpaul who continued to play with authority in a losing cause.
When Chanderpaul was stupendously caught by Walton off Leveridge it was all over bar the shouting. Permaul (4) fell at 197-8, Chanderpaul departed at 199-9 and Taylor polished off the innings by removing Beaton.
Earlier, under a clear blue sky the Scorpions won the toss and elected to bat on a good track and fast outfield and Walton started fluently, hammering Refier past mid-on for four and pulling him for sixes off consecutive deliveries before he trapped John Campbell (2) lbw in the same over to leave the score on 18-1 in 3.5 overs.
Blackwood joined Walton and struggled to time the ball in the early part of his innings but soon blossomed nicely but it was Walton who took charge and pivoted and pulled Ronsford Beaton for four before steering him behind point for another boundary.
Walton was oozing confidence and slapped Permaul for a couple of fours in successive overs while Blackwood freed the shackles by effortlessly flicking Barnwell for six before clobbering Barnwell for another huge six to post the 50-stand. He celebrated the landmark by pulling Barnwell for four.
Walton was greeted Jacobs with a tremendously timed straight drive which raced across the billiards table-like outfield like a bullet but Jacobs broke the record second wicket stand against Guyana which had progressed to 92. Blackwood was bowled for 42 just when he was looking set with the score 110-2.
The 31-year-old Walton soon reached his sixth 50 in this format and fourth in Regional one-day cricket before he latched on to Devendra Bishoo and dumped him for consecutive sixes in the 24th overs as he galloped into the 70s.
Walton soon fell six short of highest 50-over score when hit Jacobs to Assad Fudadin at long-off to leave the score on 138-3. Brandon King, who put up the lone resistance with 48 in Jamaica’s first round loss, joined Antiguan Devon Thomas and pulled Beaton for two back-to-back sixes over the Greenidge & Haynes stand and the Scorpions were starting to sting the Jaguars in the heat of Bridgetown.
Beaton insisted on bowling short and was dispatched with disdain for four by King in majestic fashion before he pugnaciously hammered Bishoo to the square leg boundary, before he hit a slower ball from Reifer to long-off after hitting a four and two sixes from 27 balls in a cameo 21 at 179-4.
Jacobs, who finished his frugal spell with a maiden, was again the Jaguars’ most economical bowler but got little support from Test spinner Bishoo who bowled too many bad balls. Rovman Powell swung Bishoo for another four and along with Thomas, who struggled to the score freely, took the score to 202 before Bishoo, who was pulled for six by Powell (16) got his man in the same over.
Damani Sewell (12) and Jerome Taylor (0) were removed by Permaul who also ran out Nikita Miller (6) leaving Thomas unbeaten at the end as the Jaguars tightened the screws in the last nine overs which only produced 45 runs.
