Greg Stewart, a 41-year-old truck driver, has been jailed for three years.
He was yesterday convicted by City Magistrate Renita Singh for causing the death of 20-year-old Dustin Crawford, a rugby player, who was killed after he was run over by a truck at Flour Mill Road, Agricola, East Bank Demerara. The accident occurred on July 22, 2015.
Stewart of 707 Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, was also found guilty of failing to stop after the accident. He was also found guilty of failing to render assistance to the injured man.
On each of the two charges he was fined $30,000 with an alternative of two weeks imprisonment.
On the day in question, Stewart drove motor lorry GJJ 7168 with trailer TAA 2203 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Crawford.
Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru contended that Stewart was driving at a fast rate of speed, when he turned into Flour Mill Road. The trailer of the vehicle hit Crawford causing him to be flung into the air before falling onto the roadway.
During the trial, the prosecutor said that Stewart continued driving the vehicle and one of the wheels ran over Crawford’s head. Stewart escaped after the accident but was later pointed out by an eyewitness, who called the police, and gave chase in a vehicle.
The young rugby player died as a result of multiple injuries.
According to reports, Crawford, of Public Road Friendship, East Bank Demerara met his demise just after he disembarked a route 42 minibus and had been walking on the southern half of the Flour Mill Road. It was reported that the 12-wheeler hauler truck turned into the street and collided with the pedestrian. Crawford had been working with the Guyana National Rugby Union as a coach.
