Roopnarine Persaud, 18, called ‘Helicopter’ and Deonarine Lakan, 23, called ‘Pascal’ were yesterday
remanded to prison after they appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse in the Wales Magistrate’s Court, West Bank Demerara, charged with murder.
Persaud and Lakan were both charged with the murder of 38-year-old Kawal Shivnauth, called Rupesh, or Rupee, an Uitvlugt estate worker who resided at Wine Bush, Leonora West Coast Demerara.
It is alleged that on January 9, at Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, Roopnarine Persaud and Deonarine Lakan murdered Kawal Shivnauth.
The accused were not required to plead to the indictable charge after it was read to them by Magistrate Clive Nurse.
On the day in question Shivnauth approached one of the accused and instructed him to stop harassing his 15-year old daughter. With the help of two of his friends, the young man started an argument with Shivnauth and then struck him to the back of his head with a bottle.
Shivnauth upon receiving the injuries ran out the shop to get help and the two accused ran behind him and dealt him several kicks and punches about his body.
The father of three was also stabbed twice to the abdomen by the accused.
The 38-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival at the Leonora Cottage Hospital after he was found with the stabs wounds about his body near an Anna Catherina shop.
The duo will make their next court appearance on February 20, 2017 at the Wales Magistrate’s Court, West Bank Demerara.
