Alvin Austin, 39 of Lot 380 Enmore, East Coast Demerara yesterday appeared before Magistrate Beverly Cheddi in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer a charge that on January 10, last, at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously assaulted Basheer Asgarally.
The accused pleaded guilty at a sitting of the Night Court in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Police Prosecutor Shevon Jupiter told the court that the accused and Asgarally are known to each other. On the day in question around 15:50 hrs, Austin and Asgarally among others were playing a game of dominoes when the accused picked up some of the dominoes and threw them at Asgarally. The victim sustained a swollen face and a laceration the forehead.
The accused when given a chance to address the court stated, “The facts presented is correct; I did do it. Yuh know when people losing how they does behave. It was four of us playing domino and he kept losing so he get knock out and because of that he decided to stand behind me and tell then men what I have in my hand.
“I turn around and asked him if he wanted me to pelt him in the face and he said if I am a bad man pelt so I decided to pick up some of the dominoes and pelt him in the face and one burst his head.
Asgarally made a report to the Police Station and the accused was arrested and charged.
When the Magistrate asked him if he was remorseful for his action he stated, “I ain’t really sorry but I am sorry. He has to remain a loser and he will be a loser for the rest of his life. He can’t want play and win all the time. You have to win some and lose some. He needs to be tough. The only reason he went to the police station was because them men was laughing at him.”
The magistrate placed the accused on a bond to keep the peace for six months and sentenced him to perform 50 hours of community service at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
