Minister with responsibility of Housing, Valerie Patterson, informed yesterday that following a series of consultations, the decision has been made to lower the age requirement to apply for house lots from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA).
Back in February 2016, the Minister had alluded to the fact that there are a number of things that 18 year-olds can do – legally, and applying for a house lot was not one of them. However, during the months of September, October and November of that year, she embarked on a number of consultations to garner the views of the public.
“From Annandale to Anna Regina; Belladrum to Bartica; Linden to New Amsterdam; Rose Hall to Georgetown to Diamond, the public was overwhelming in their support of changing the minimum age requirement from 21 to 18, for those who have proven that they are capable of acquiring a housing solution and when I say Housing solution, it means that a person can qualify for a house lot or housing unit” the Minister remarked.
An 18-year-old can now apply but will have to wait three years before receiving an allocation.
She expounded: “This gives the young applicant the opportunity to save monies to facilitate construction at time of allocation and also the opportunity to build their credit worthiness with financial institutions or engage in meaningful employment.”
Minister Patterson added also that consultation were held in several other areas including: Anna Regina and Lima Sands, Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam); La Parfaite Harmonie, Zeeburg and Tuschen in Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara); Perseverance, Sophia, East & West Ruimveldt, Cummings lodge, Paradise & Dochfour in Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica); Fort Wellington in Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice); Number 5 Village, New Amsterdam, Rose Hall, Number 76 and 77 Corriverton in Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne); Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni), Lethem and Parishara in Region Nine (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo); and Ituni and Kwakwani in Region 10 (Upper Demerara/Upper Berbice.
Consultations were also conducted at a number of Public Days at the CH&PA’s Brickdam office.
“These meetings or interactions, allowed me to hear directly from the people and to provide, where practicable, a framework within which their issues may be resolved,” the Minister said.
