Dear Editor;
The great Nelson Mandela from South Africa has said it beautifully- education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. For us to progress as a nation, we must continuously educate ourselves, looking at the lessons and practices of developed nations to chart our way,
Guyana seems to be readying itself for change in a big way, starting with oil. It is looking at the best practices of other big producers and asking for help.
Recently, there was a debate on the installation of parking meters in the city. Some felt that Guyana was not ready for it. Others believed that the deal was not transparent.
However, the city and the company have decided to forge ahead with the project. On January 1st, 2017 in the Kaieteur News’ New Year’s Day edition, there were two full page ads by the company extolling the values of the parking meters and how they should be used.
However, my eyes were drawn to a part of the ad which spoke of the hours that drivers will be charged for parking, specifically, the company, Smart City Solutions, said that it will not be charging for parking on New Year’s Day, Republic Day, Independence Day, Easter Monday, Good Friday, Labour Day and Christmas Day.
Mr. Editor, surely this must be a mistake. Who did the city and company consult with? What about Phagwah, Diwali, Eid, Indian Arrival Day and even Labour Day?
This is totally unacceptable. I want to feel that not much thought went into this. There can be no other reason. The Hindu and Muslim organizations should be paying close attention to this and should raise their voices too. Smart City and the Mayor and City Councillors need to correct this mistake, ASAP.
