Dear Editor,
In your publication dated 1 January 2017 on page 66 titled, New Year’s Day Messages, the Government of Guyana’s message indicated the country is on a path to a “green state…to move along a path of economic growth and towards improvement in our citizens’ quality of life.” I want to take this opportunity to urge all leaders and all citizens across all regions in Guyana to adopt a responsible attitude to promote a cleaner town or village along with the vision for a cleaner and ‘greener’ Guyana and a better quality of life as per the Government of Guyana’s New Year’s Day message.
As a visitor to this country, I decided to visit No. 63 Village Beach in Corentyne, Berbice on this New Year’s Day, where I was disgusted by the garbage and overgrown bushes, drift wood, dead animals, religious flags strewn in all areas along the beach. Like many beach frequenters, I also witnessed several young adults drinking beverages near their cars where they threw empty cans and bottles in the sand without consideration for the piles of garbage already on the beach.
It is clear, no one is picking up the garbage that is left on the beach or along the road to the beach. I call on all Guyanese to adopt a responsible attitude of making Guyana a tidy place, not only in Georgetown but throughout all villages and towns across this green nation. As Guyanese, we ought to ask themselves, “What can I do to make my village, town clean?” This attitude of questioning could contribute to an improvement in the quality of life of all Guyanese as well as to add value to the Government of Guyana’s New Year’s Day message as a way forward for the remainder of this year’s journey and beyond.
