A West Coast Berbice farmer has been reported missing for the past 18 days after leaving
his sister’s home to buy cigarettes.
Ramzam Bassalat, 45, also known as ‘Bucky’, was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans, leaving his sister Yasmin Brijmohan’s home at Woodley Park Village, around 8 am.
Yasmin Brijmohan via telephone said that her brother was living with a friend called “Anil” but subsequently left the home after he told them that he was beaten.
According to the woman, her brother returned home on December 16 and had visible marks of violence about his body. “Dem beat him;, he come with pain in he skin, brand pon he hand, head and body”. She stated that she took care of him while there for the couple days. She disclosed that on the day when he left he requested money from her to buy cigarettes,” he tell me she he want money fuh buy cigarettes but me tell he me he don’t get money and he walk go back yard barefoot and me never see he back.”
Her brother she stated is a habitual drinker and has been separated from his wife for some time now, he reportedly has a son.
The woman told this publication that her brother left with a white T-shirt and a pair of blue jeans without any footwear or anything else. She stated that after a few days had passed she became worried and with another sister ventured to the nearest police station where they filed a missing person’s report.
Brijmohan disclosed that after the report was made relatives and friends joined forces in search of the farmer. She stressed that no police accompanied them on the searches and revealed that the ranks have not made her brother’s case a priority.
Another sister, Nazreen Shahid, said that during the eighteen days her brother has been missing, she reported her brother being missing twice at the Fort Wellington Police Station. “Me go report it two time and them police na come out and investigate. Me never hear back nothing from them”, the frustrated woman said.
