Dear Editor,
Ever since the announcement was publicized that Minister Volda Lawrence would be taking up the mantle as Minister of Public Health, there has been a series of condemnations about her suitability for the position. The major claim is that she is not qualified for the portfolio since she has no medical background. For the education of the naysayers:
Gail Texeira had no medical background but she served as Minister of Health. She was not even a nurse; Dr. Henry Jeffrey had no medical background, yet he served as Minister of Health; Winifred Gaskin also served for a period as Minister of Health; Leslie Ramsammy was a Laboratory Technician, yet he served as Minister of Health. Mrs Janet Jagan was a nurse. So, can someone tell me what is all the noise about? We are so quick to condemn just as quickly as we ‘refuse to remember’ some glaring precedents.
