Dear Editor,
Kindly publish this article in your papers so that the traffic chief and the law makers can see it and review it. Over the past years in particular, I have been observing the many road fatalities caused by indiscretion displayed by drivers and nothing was done to curb this beastly behaviour. It is time drivers act like civilized people. I am proposing that drivers who drive above the speed limit and cause a fatality should be sentenced to 5 years in prison and his driver’s license be suspended for 5 years.
Those who drive under the influence of alcohol and caused death to innocent people whether other drivers or civilians should be sentenced to 10 years in prison and be banned for life from driving. A special traffic court should be established to administer justice as regards these offences. These penalties may sound stringent but a clear message must be sent to these heartless, careless, and inconsiderate drivers.
Life is precious and must be preserved at all cost. Guyana is too small and we cannot afford to waste valuable lives because of lawless drivers. I trust that this year drivers would be more careful and use basic common sense. Drivers when you are behind that wheel your life is at stake, pedestrians’ lives are at stake. Be wise, be careful; remember you are a pedestrian too, you have to get out of that car and walk from point A to point B. Mr Traffic Chief and Mr. law maker consider my proposal on enforcing the law and deliver severe penalties to offenders.
