Dear Editor,
Thank you for permitting me a space in your newspaper to air my concern. About 4 weeks ago I was stopped by a certain officer in front of the Leonora Police Station. After showing him the necessary documents he pointed out that the tint on my car was too dark. Mind you, I had 50% tint on the glass of my two front doors. He asked me to remove my tint which I did; after all who am I to argue since it’s the law. He proceeded to write up a recognizance to send me to court. Mind you had I already removed my tint. He stated that he still had to charge me since I had the tint on in the first place.
This letter is not to bash those officers who are doing their job. This officer was very professional in carrying out his duties. He was very prompt after I pointed out that I had an emergency meeting at the hospital. The purpose of this letter is to ask the Honorable Minister Khemraj Ramjattan, if the police officers’ privately owned vehicles are exempted from this tint removal exercise. Are family members and close friends of police officers exempted as well? Do these officers have tint permit for their privately owned vehicles? Why is it that we cannot see into their cars from whatever angle we stand?
Why are they allowed 5% tint or any percentage of tints on the glass of all four doors, as well as the back and front windscreens? I know this current exercise is to assist in identifying criminals so my question is; are the police and their family members and close friends hiding the criminals in their darkly tinted cars? The police don’t know who the criminals are even if they walk up and kiss them on their cheeks. Are these police and their compatriots who blatantly break the law untouchable? Or does quicksilver run in their veins? I refuse to bribe any police. If I break the law I shall have my day in court. I request the Honorable Minister Khemraj Ramjattan to enforce this law on the police as well. Charge and drag them to court along with the civilians. Civilians are scared to bring to light the issue as it relates to darkly tinted police private-owned cars, for fear of victimization.
