Dec 24, 2016 Letters
Dear Editor,
Stabroek Sports, December 13, 2016 carried a headline “Govt committed to investing in athletes” says Minister Henry as boxers return to hero’s welcome. The article displayed a photograph of our heroes in the company of Minister, Nicolette Henry, President of the Guyana Olympic Association, K. Juman Yassin, Director of Sport, Christopher Jones and President of Guyana Boxing Board, Steve Ninvalle.
I join with others in congratulating our boxers for an unprecedented and excellent performance. The Golden Arrowhead flew proudly in Barbados. In the picture taken in our own country it was the opposite. Our flag was held in the wrong position. Kaieteur News had it correctly in their coverage of the special welcoming ceremony. Why those distinguished hosts did not realise that our flag was wrongly displayed and take corrective action before the photograph was taken?
If we want to be great achievers in sports we must be observant and pay attention to little things and inculcate those qualities in the minds of our young sports men and women. It is the little things that we fail to do that will come back later and haunt us. Not paying attention to small details can lead up to among other things showing disrespect for one of our symbols of nationhood, the flag as was the case under review. Let us aspire to do better as we celebrate our golden jubilee.
