Two constables are currently under close arrest at the Central Police Station after being busted Monday with marijuana in the trunk of their car.
Kaieteur News understands that the ranks Constable Delroy Fraser and Constable Bharat Shattapaul, were returning home from Georgetown with a police vehicle (bus) driven by Shattapaul. It is alleged that the driver of the police vehicle stopped a motor car and after a brief conversation with the unidentified man inside the car a bag was collected.
The man was placed into the police vehicle, he was subsequently dropped off some distance away on the West Coast of Berbice. The constable then drove off heading to New Amsterdam. According to a reliable police source the constable drove the police bus to Vryman’s Erven whilst the other rank was told to drive the car bearing license plate number HC 3179 , a white Toyota 212 belonging to Constable Shattapaul to Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam where the packages were offloaded into the trunk of the car. The car was subsequently driven back by the other rank Fraser and parked along Coburg Street, a few meters away from the Central Police Station where both ranks are stationed.
Meanwhile, acting on information the Acting Commander of B Division, Senior Superintendent Errol Watts, together with other senior ranks swooped down on the two constables. The keys for HC 3179 were requested from the owner of the Toyota 212 (Shattapaul). The man refused to hand over. After he hesitated to provide the keys to his car, ranks were instructed to smash a glass on the door of the car to gain entry.
This was done, the car was unlocked and the trunk was unlocked where three parcels wrapped in tape were discovered.
The contents were unwrapped and weighed where it amounted to some five kilograms of Cannabis Sativa (marijuana).
Both parties were present during the search and both denied knowledge of the parcels found. Both ranks are under close arrest assisting with investigations.
