Dear Editor,
Kindly afford me the opportunity to extend sincere congratulations to the Upper Demerara/Kwakwani (Linden) for their outstanding performance in winning the National Schools Championship for an unprecedented 15th time.
Over the years the Lindeners have demonstrated immense talent and prowess in various sporting activities, such as athletics, football, table tennis, billiards and cricket, yet they are being deliberately prevented from participating in Cricket by a group calling itself the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB).
Although the cricket administration Act 2014 includes the Upper Demerara Cricket Association as a bona fide member of the GCB; it is the only area Association that has not been allowed to participate at any level in any of the tournaments organized by the so called GCB and particularly the National School’s Cricket Competition which was co-sponsored by Digicel and the Government.
What is surprising is that the present Government seems to be supportive of the orchestrated repudiation of Region 10 cricketers, while the Region 10 administration and people seem to be satisfied with the obnoxious discrimination meted out to a genuine legal body that contributed 16,000 votes to the Government’s election to office, and who should therefore be more vocal at representing their rights.
It is noteworthy to mention that at the November 4th Launching of the School’s Championship the Minister of Sports and other Sports Officials publicly supported the need for sports and education within the school curriculum, whilst outlining the immense benefits to be derived from this effort. Maybe Upper Demerara Cricket Association (Linden) is not considered important in this regard, when it comes to cricket.
The involvement of the Upper Demerara Cricket Association in local cricket tournaments could bolster our chances of providing quality players to Guyana and WI teams, for although Guyana has been winning regional tournaments players have been finding it difficult to access any of current WI teams (Male or Female), which arguablyare presently at the weakest in considering the past twenty years or so.
The continued exclusion of Upper Demerara Cricket Association from participating in Guyana Cricket stems from a deliberate attempt by this group, GCB, to stymie the democratic process of free and fair elections throughout the GCB membership, and therefore constitutes.
1. A blatant disregard for the law of the land,
2. Lack of opportunity for the youths of Region 10,
3. A deliberate practice of discrimination that must not be tolerated by any Government
The simple solution to the problem is for the Attorney General to pursue his defence of the frivolous challenge to the law, by Anand Sanasie etal which violates the constitutional rights of citizens with an injunction that effectively stops all elections indefinitely.
The Attorney General must now appoint a lawyer in his defence, bring the matter up for urgent discussion and decision, so that we would have free and fair elections, which is the only way we can bring legality back to Guyana Cricket.
It is long overdue.
