Dear Editor,
I’ve banged my head so many times out of frustration with the current state of affairs in my beloved country that I have resorted to putting on a helmet prior to reading your paper. The PPP-C during their term in office governed in their own man-made cocoon of family and friends, and after their defeat, emerged as righteous butterflies.
Mouths flapping, antennas up, oblivious to the stench and waste that had engulfed their cocoon, they have now embarked on a similar policy of a party of the country that they totally disrespected, the Republican Party of the United States.
Using a strategy of condemnation, fault finding and the peddling of false information to sway the population’s confidence in current administration, their aim is the building of a bigger cocoon to accommodate the anticipated petro dollars with a victory at the polls. And to my surprise, the current administration is an unconscious accessory to the plot. My advice to the leader of the current administration is to stop being a ‘nice guy’ to his cabinet and take a tough stance against anyone fingered in questionable dealings.
I don’t know if he’s counting, but soon it would be two years, then three, and by year four, it’s too late. The crime situation which is deemed by those in authority to be down does not bode well with the populace. There is a significant difference in the degree of confidence in one’s security when faced with two hundred incidents involving pick pockets and three robberies involving the use of firearms and the wounding or killing of the victims.
Mr. Editor, I had stated in a letter a few months ago that judges should be given newspapers daily to read so they can make sensible decisions regarding the granting of bail to those involved in robberies using illegal guns.
Additionally, the laws pertaining to the charge of robbery under arms have to be changed. A person charged with committing a robbery while being in the possession of an illegal firearm has to face two charges – illegal gun possession and robbery under arms. The charge of illegal gun possession should not be a bailable offense and should carry an automatic five year jail sentence.
How many people have to suffer at the hands of criminals out on bail for committing armed robberies who hide their guns for their brief court appearance? I have to ask the following questions, “Is there corruption in the judicial system?” “Mr. President, do you not have some sort of executive power to end this madness?” Guyana does not have a revolving door of justice. What we have is a court that is a speed bump on the expressway to lawlessness mayhem and death.
