Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul’s 20th First-Class five-wicket haul and a 73rd
First Class ton by Man-of-the-Match Shiv Chanderpaul provided defending champions Guyana Jaguars with an emphatic 10-wicket win against T&T Red Force on the final day of their fifth round Digicel Regional four-day cricket tournament at Providence yesterday.
Pacer Keon Joseph (2-38) and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie (2-92) supported Permaul as the Red Force were bowled out for 235 after starting the day on 96-2.
Kyle Hope (40), Jason Mohammed (36), Yannic Cariah (27) and Skipper Yannick Ottley (21) wasted good starts for the struggling Red Force unit.
The Jaguars, set 20 to win reached 21-0 in 2.4 overs with Shemron Hetymer, who smashed two fours and a six in 17, hit Jon Russ Jagessar for a boundary to finish to contest with more rain threatening.
Rajendra Chandrika (4) was the other not out batsman for the Jaguars who moved to 64.6 points, 3.2 points behind leaders Jamaica Tallawahs (67.8) at the half way stage of the tournament which takes a break for the Christmas Holidays and resumes in March after the Regional Super50 is played from January 24 to February 18.
Scores: Jaguars 378 & 21-0, Red Force 162 & 235.
The 27-year-old Permaul followed up his 4-31 in the first innings with 5-53 for match figures 9-84 to take the tally for Guyana to 314 with 18 five-wicket hauls. It was his 10th five-for at Providence.
Permaul, who has played six Tests, is one of only five bowlers with 300 Regional FC wickets, while Chanderpaul (447) is the only Guyanese batsman to reach 300 runs or a century this season.
Joseph (17) and Raymon Reifer (16) are the leading pacers so far, while Motie has 17 scalps.
Play started at 09:00hrs but after three overs rain stopped play with the Red Force on 112-2 and when play resumed 65 minutes later, night watchman Roshon Pierre (5) was removed by Motie at 112-3.
Mohammed joined Hope and took the score to 147 before Hope, who missed a hook off Joseph, repeated the shot in the same over only to see Hetymer at deep square-leg run forward to take the miscued offering to leave the score 147-4. His injudicious shot ended his innings of 40 from 184 balls, 237 minutes with three fours and a six.
The score was 151-3 at Lunch but rain during the interval cut out 20 minutes from the second session and when the action restarted Cariah drove Reifer sweetly to the cover boundary before stroking Permaul for another delightful four.
Mohammed touched one to Wicket-Keeper Anthony Bramble off Reifer to leave the score 168-5 as the sun returned in all its glory to the relief of the Jaguars’ camp and the few fans in the stands.
Ottley joined Cariah and with a strong breeze blowing across the ground which had the T&T and Guyana flags dancing merrily in the Grass Mound, Cariah elegantly whipped Reifer off his pads for four as the Red Force closed in on
the 216 needed to make the host bat again.
Ottley drove Motie through the covers for four and dumped him back over his head for six to post the 200 before Cariah (27) was lbw to Permaul after reaching the boundary four times to end an important 39-run sixth wicket stand and leave the score on 207-6.
Roshon Primus, built like a heavyweight Boxer, joined his Captain and insured the Jaguars had to bat again before Ottley (21) was lbw to Permaul at 216-7. Primus (11) hammered Motie for four but was caught at cover as he tried to hit the spinner out of the ground next ball to leave the Red Force on 226-8.
Marlon Richards (7) clobbered Motie for six but was taken at short leg in the next over from Permaul who finished off the innings with his 27th wicket this season when Steven Katwaroo’s top-edged sweep provided Bramble with his fourth catch and 24th dismissal this season which is the most by any Keeper.
