-Back Circle claims third place
Even a torrential downpour could not stop street football juggernauts Sparta Boss from retaining their Georgetown Zone ‘Guinness Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal title on Friday evening, at the National Park.
They defeated Tucville 1-0 in front of another large turnout to underline their status as the best ‘Road Ball’ team in the country with the national title to show as well.
In the third place playoff, Back Circle and Broad Street Bullies played to a nil-all stalemate in regulation and extra times, before the former won 3-2 in the penalty shootout.
In the feature clash that started in ideal conditions, Sparta Boss showed menacing intentions from the kickoff when Sheldon ‘Saddle’ Shepherd immediately let fly a fierce right footer that flew over the barricades and into the crowd.
Regaining possession almost instantly, Sparta Boss proceeded on an offensive drive with their nippy talisman Devon Millington skipping past two tackles, before cutting inside to fire into the goal after two minutes.
That setback was enough to silence the partisan Tucville supporters at least for a while as they wondered whether their team could rebound from the early onslaught.
The ascendancy was certainly with the reigning title holders who attacked with frequency and had it not been for the experience of the wily veteran Gerald Gritten, the scoreline might have increased as he was repeatedly called upon to use all his skill to shut down several threatening forays.
The break came with Sparta Boss holding a slim 1-0 advantage and the weather looking
ominous.
On the resumption, the rains came and made things more interesting for both teams as they slipped and slid over the park.
However, the champs were able to hold on to their lead until the final whistle sounded to confirm their rights to hold on to the title.
Earlier, Back Circle and Broad Street failed in their bid to produce a lively contest, perhaps still having some of the residue of their disappointing semi-final losses on their minds.
The game never reached the anticipated hype and at the end of regulation and extra times, no goals were scored sending the match into a penalty shootout to determine the winner.
The kicks went even until the third one when Broad Street missed and Back Circle scored to hand them victory.
Before the commencement of the final, Director of Sport Christopher Jones, Guinness Brand Manager Lee Baptiste and Petra Organisation Co-Director Troy Mendonca met the teams.
Due to the rain the presentation of prizes will be done on a date to be announced.
Sparta Boss will receive $500,000 and trophy, 2nd place $200,000, 3rd place $ 100,000 and 4th place $75,000.
The other sponsors on board were Colours Boutique, Powerade and Rainforest Waters.
