With 16 of 66 matches remaining at the close of Saturday, several tennis players welcomed the return of former Men’s Champion Phillip Squires to local tennis competition at the National Racquet Centre who teamed up with friend and former Non-Pariel club member Joseph DeJonge in the Men’s Open Doubles of the Trophy Stall sponsored tournament.
The combination provided no great challenge as they were taken down 6/1, 6/1 by the lethal force of Anthony Downes/Jason Andrews who are the most decorated doubles champions in recent years.
In other Men’s Open Doubles Quarters, the Oswin Coggins/Stephen Bailey consistent partnership continues to pay off as they out-maneuvered Jamal Goodluck/Darren King 6/4 6/2.
Ladies Open Doubles:
In the longest match of the tournament, which lasted 3 hours and 12 minutes, the young pair of Alana Chung/Margaret Subryan braved the blistering heat to outlast Diana Bharat/Kizzy Richmond in the Quarters in three sets 7/5 4/6 6/3, while the team of former Ladies Champion Shawna Gentle and newcomer Fiona Bushell def Kalyca Fraser/Ciara Pooran 6/3 6/3. The Gentle/Bushell combination seemed very coordinated as they played a tactful game controlling their play to finish points quickly and conserve energy. In the semis, they will meet the emerging Ladies Doubles force of Afruica Gentle/Cristy Campbell who received a free ride to the semis with a walkover from Amanda Roberts/Deina Sandbeharry.
Mixed Open Doubles:
In the Round of 16, Joshua Kalekyezi/Alana Chung received a walkover from Jamal Goodluck/Grace McCalman, while in the Quarters, strong service games and crafty net play of the Heimraj Resaul/Kalyca Fraser pair got the better of the relatively new partnership of Jordan Beaton/Ciara Pooran 6/1 6/4 to advance to the semis. In a highly contested match, the stealth combination of the young power duo Mark McDonald/Nicola Ramdyhan edged past Robert Bostwick/Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan in three sets 7/6(7-3) 7/5. As expected, big serves were traded between Coach Shelly and daughter Nicola, but it was the feisty Mark McDonald who provided ample support for his partner at the net, putting pressure on their opponents and forcing errors to concede points early. A showdown is expected when they meet Heimraj Resaul/Kalyca Fraser in the semis.
Men’s Over 35 Doubles Round Robin:
Leyland Leacock/Ronald Murray secured two wins, first by easily defeating Albert Razick/Harry Panday 6/1 6/2. In their other match against Alex Almeida/Sandeep Chand, it took three sets 6/4 4/6 6/3 with the sharp net play and cross court angles by both Chand and Almeida which came a surprise counter attack to similar tactics from Leacock/Murray.
