It was one of the saddest pictures to see in a Guyanese newspaper in recent times. The Guyana Chronicle carried the image of a beautiful animal put to death by the authorities at the Correia Airport at Ogle. The dead puppy is one of three that the authorities put down. Travelers deplaning at Ogle said more are being euthanized.
The death of these cuties came one week after the Kaieteur News featured the story of Conrad Gomes whose four pitbull pups barely missed being killed at the same airport.
The story was carried in the Monday, November 28 edition of KN with photographs of Mr. Gomes, his dogs and two of his employees. On Wednesday, November 30, my column was devoted to this issue and I questioned why from the interior to Ogle by plane, a Guyanese has to go through Customs when that does not happen by river or road transport. The story of the near death of Mr. Gomes’s puppies moved me deeply, so I spoke to Mr. Gomes, who promised me that we will file writs against the relevant governmental authorities. Sadly, less than a week later, those animals were killed.
The question is; did the leaders in government read those KN items to know what was taking place at the airport? My answer is yes. They read KN, they read my columns. Don’t tell me they don’t. You let me do a column accusing Granger or Nagamootoo or David Patterson of corruption and you will see how quick the phones in the editor’s office will ring; the lawyers’ letters will follow.
Rupert Roopnaraine is threatening libel over the D’Urban Park company. He had to have read the newspapers. Aah! Here is the thing. They only read and act on what is written about them.
In this psychically broken down, savage land, I could vividly imagine what every leader of the Government said as they had their breakfast reading the papers on Mr. Gomes’ plight and my complaints in that particular column. “Wuh Freddie talking about? Duh killing daags at de airport? Daags? I taught was people Freddie talking about, nat daags.”
This is what colonialism has done to the peoples of the Third World. Young Ashma John, daughter of the famous Splashmin’s owner, did a good article on the effects of colonialism; she made reference to her country. I will devote an entire column on the poignant viewpoint of that young lady.
Here is the quote from the Chronicle about what is taking place at Ogle; “Several passengers have expressed shock at the action of authorities who have euthanised and burned several dogs brought to the port from hinterland locations. A passenger reported that the airport authorities “cruelly” killed and burnt three dogs which were brought out from the border location of Eteringbang to Ogle. Two weeks ago, a similar situation had occurred; this time the animals were reportedly brought from another Region Seven aerodrome. The owner of the animal was upset that the airport officials took a decision to euthanise his dog which was raised in the interior location. The animal was later burnt. It remains unclear if there are any health inspectors at any hinterland airstrip, including those near the country’s borders.
“It is unclear whether there is an operational animal health quarantine unit at the Ogle Airport and calls to the numbers provided for airport officials and Ogle Airport Inc which manages the airport, went unanswered in recent days.
“On Saturday, officials at the Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) on Robb Street expressed surprise at the information. It was noted that the “cruel” measures adopted by the management of the airport did not conform to a 72-hour time period within which the owner of domesticated or terrestrial animals are given to provide the necessary documentation on the health status of animals. In that time period, the animals are expected to be quarantined.”
In my article yesterday, I made reference to the Overdeveloped State in Guyana. It is not concerned with service. There are no quarantine facilities at the Ogle Airport. There are no health inspectors in different regions in the interior. Such services do not occupy the minds of post-colonial leaders.
The Overdeveloped State is devoted to state power preservation. Those puppies are dead because Mr. Gomes did not keep his word of filing court documents seeking injunctions against the relevant authorities. If he reads this, I hope we can still proceed. Trust me! Animals are more devoted and loving creatures than Homo sapiens, especially those humans that love power.
