Dear Editor,
One cannot help but agree/disagree with some of the comments pertaining to the 14% VAT on water and electricity. One main point though I think ought to be considered amidst all the hype. Sir, that word is VALUE. Now please understand, I am not against paying taxes but if VAT is to be imposed on water bills, then I must bring out that VALUE aspect. Please tell me from President to resident what VALUE and how much VALUE can be placed on the smelly, rusty coloured liquid that at times trickles from the GWI controlled water mains? Can a decent VALUE be placed on this so called commodity?
50 years ago we used to drink water from the pipes, no questions asked. Now 50 years after we suffer with technological fix insight and now to be burdened with a tax – a VALUE added tax. What VALUE? Where is the thought process behind this? I ask of all those who recommended this… Where is the humane aspect behind this? In tiny St. Vincent, water can be drunk from the pipes. All over the Caribbean water comes in a presentable and acceptable manner – no foul obnoxious smell. In this land of many waters, one has to endure morning ablutions with terrible water and the last bath at night with still terrible water. WHY? WHY? WHY? The thing is we pay a monthly bill for this rusty water and now a 14% VALUE added tax is to be paid for this muck? What VALUE I ask can be tagged to this smelly liquid?
I plead with all in authority to carefully heed the requests of the poor and hold back this tax until the water from the pipes is pleasant to taste and smell. Please Mr. President! Please Mr. Finance Minister! Please Mr. Minister of State! and ALL Ministers, PLEASE! Hear our cry and hold back this burden from a suffering nation.
