Dear Mr. Editor,
It was brought to my attention that an unconstitutional meeting of clubs affiliated to the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) was held at the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and no member of the federation’s executive was present.
Our rules is clear as day and speaks to who has the legal authority to call such a meeting, I would want to believe that the clubs and its representatives are aware of this. There are rules and laws that make up a constitution of any country, whether it be cultural, religious or political.
It is very unfair to usurp a person’s elected position, especially when that person is trying his/her very best to develop the state of a sport and in this case, cycling. I am not one to blow my own trumpet but in this instance, I would like to make it known that I took on the challenge of charting the way forward for the sport in Guyana and am committed to fulfilling this commitment.
It is never and would never be easy being at the helm of any organization but one must have a set of honest and committed individuals who share the same vision and are willing to work as a collective in order to achieve success.
We have before us a young and talented cadre of cyclists who are looking forward to us, the leaders to chart the way forward for them. They are looking for honesty and sincerity in the way we do business, not persons who are prone to steal power by all means necessary.
As a committed person and now President of the GCF, I have assisted the young riders physically, mentally, and psychologically to maintain and upgrade themselves and ultimately, Guyana. This was done by way of providing cycles, clothing, and training for those concerned.
This is something that I am committed to and will continue to do so.
It is very untrue for persons to say that I cannot be contacted, as you would know Mr. Editor, distance has been conquered by technology. When I was not there in person, I received, accepted and sent out messages through whatsapp; and emails. I often communicated with Mrs. Gemma Williams, the immediate past Secretary of the GCF who had accepted our request to work along with the new Secretary, Mrs. Maria Leung to guide her.
This was discussed and agreed to by the executive of the federation. Mrs. Williams and I would have discussed the agenda for the GCF as well as plans for the improvement of the sport and the organisation.
It is always difficult to fathom or comprehend when someone close and seemingly involved would want to pull in a different direction to what is agreed to. What is even worse is that it can spell destruction for the future of many talented young sportsmen and women.
The illegal meeting that was held and came up with an IMC to govern the sport would not see the light of day. Those persons who would have instigated this unconstitutional gathering, with their own motive (s) will be held accountable for their actions.
This unacceptable behavior shows disrespect for myself and those who try to uplift the standards of the GCF, in spite of the challenges being faced. No association or federation in Guyana is without challenges; we must do things in the correct manner at all times and be weary of those who are seeking power by all and any means possible.
Guyana has very talented young people who need to be exposed and chosen for worldwide activities and are depending on those senior, responsible folks to make it happen for them.
Being selfish, dishonest, and uncaring will get those who are arrogant and discontented nowhere. I would like all those who are involved and concerned to know and do the right things by exhibiting the best qualities and attitudes for success.
It must be known too, that I contacted UCI (The International Cycling Union) and COPACI (Confederation Pan-American Cycling International) and sent them a copy of the Constitution. They replied and confirmed that, “Mr. Horace Burrowes is the only recognised President of the GCF, and he will be the President until the new elections in 2019.
I would be home shortly to deal with this and other pressing matters of the federation. I would like to reaffirm my commitment towards the real development of our riders and am seeking to work with persons who are selfless in similar pursuits.
Horace Burrowes,
President
Guyana Cycling Federation
